Both use forced hot air. Both crisp food beautifully. So which is actually worth the counter space?
The short answer
- Cooking for 1–2 people, small kitchen, want speed → air fryer.
- Cooking full meals, baking, batch-cooking → convection oven.
- Have both → the air fryer will still get used more.
Where they differ
| Air Fryer | Convection Oven | |
|---|---|---|
| Preheat time | 2-3 min | 8-12 min |
| Energy per session | ~0.4 kWh | ~1.2 kWh |
| Capacity | 3-8 L basket | 30-60 L cavity |
| Best for | Chips, wings, reheating | Roasts, bakes, trays |
| Countertop footprint | Medium | Large |
What most people get wrong
Buyers see "air fryer" as gimmicky and reach for the convection oven by default. In real households, the air fryer gets used 5-6 nights a week; the big oven gets used at weekends. If your weeknight cooking is "chuck it in and eat 15 minutes later", the air fryer wins on running cost alone.
